If you’ve seen the sign that says “I Was Normal Three Cats Ago,” you already know where this list starts (we have two cats, Thelma and Louis, who are brother and sister, so I’m only one cat away from the sentiment being applicable to my situation… I make no promises).
The adorable photo at the top of this post is one of our vet reviewer’s Dr. Mortlock’s SIX cats, so that sign (“Yes, I really do need all these cats”) is made for her! We say the more cats, the better!

Funny cat signs are a great way to let people know what type of household they’re entering. The best ones are funny, but they’re also true, because if you have cats you know your stuff is covered in fur, your bathroom door isn’t really all that private, and your cats truly do run the place.

I’ve listed 20 of my favorite funny cat signs, below: 10 from Amazon and 10 from small shops on Etsy. I’ve organized the list by where you might want to put them, starting with signs for shelves and desks, then front doors, then bathrooms, and ending with signs for the wall. Many of the signs on Etsy are handmade, so delivery may take a bit longer than usual, and one shop will even make a sign with any wording you want!
For a shelf, a desk or a tiered tray
If you’re looking for something that doesn’t require putting holes in your wall (either because you’re a renter or can’t decide where you want to hang something yet), these little block signs are a great place to start!
1. I Was Normal Three Cats Ago
This one by Primitives by Kathy is a cute little wooden box sign with a black background, the saying in cream letters and paw prints along the edge. The saying references the fact that the third cat is when things go awry! The block is sturdy enough to stand on its own, but it can also be hung on a wall. It’s been running a little low in stock on Amazon, so if you can’t find that one, the saying is very common and there are plenty of other options out there.
2. It’s Not Cat Hair, It’s Kitty Glitter
Mtrgdn’s sign is another cute option. The little block is white with the phrase in cursive and cute little ears and whiskers around the outside. It’s five by five inches, and like the first one it can be hung on a wall or displayed on a shelf or desk. “Kitty glitter” is actually a phrase a lot of cat owners use instead of cat hair, and it certainly sounds better!
One cross-stitcher on Reddit explained how the name caught on with their friends:
Yeah my friend once said man cat hair is on everything. I said like glitter, yeah? So it’s kitty glitter and she laughed so hard. That is just what we call it now in my group of friends and it really makes sense. I get kitty glitter in my projects all the time. 😂

3. In This House We Narrate the Cat’s Thoughts
For cat owners who do a voice for their cat, this sign by HrdFioFo on Amazon is a good one. It’s a wooden block in a natural wood frame measuring 5.9 x 5.9 inches, and there’s a line drawing of a cat stretching down the side. It stands up on its own, so it can go right on a shelf or a desk.
4. The Cats Have Been Fed. Don’t Fall for Their Lies.
This block by BeadandBoard on Etsy is 5.5 inches square and 3/4 of an inch thick, and it’s handmade, painted and sealed for a tiered tray, a shelf or a countertop. It’s handy if you have more than one person feeding the cats at home (or a cat sitter). Other signs from the same shop include “I Was Crazy Before the Cats Got Here” and “If Cats Could Talk They Wouldn’t.”
5. If the Cat Is Bothering You, I Can Lock You in the Other Room
Made in the USA, this sign by InkwoodCrafters on Etsy is hand painted on distressed 3/4 inch plywood. It measures 6 x 6 inches, and no two are alike. It’s for reminding the guest who’s complaining about the cat that’s lying on them exactly who lives here.
For the front door
Depending on where you live, the people who see your door sign the most could be the delivery person, guests, or your neighbors, and some of these serve the practical purpose of making sure people remember not to let your cats out! The doormat and door are about all I get as outside decorating since I live in an apartment building.
6. Don’t Let the Cats Out (or the Cops In)
The saying on this MAINEVENT mat from Amazon has been on doormats for eons, and it’s still one of the funniest options. This coir doormat measures 30 by 17 inches and has .6 of an inch thick fibers, with a black cat peeking up from the bottom of the mat. It’s best used on a covered porch or patio for longest lasting use.
It makes a good gift, too, as one Reddit commenter found out:
I have a girl at the office that I am close to…. I got her a welcome mat that says “don’t let the cats out or the cops in”…. She is a huge cat person and we work in the criminal court…. So she got a chuckle !

7. Hi! and Bye…
This mat by AMARU Door Mats on Amazon is the friendliest option on this list for anyone who wants to be funny without being too mean to the mail person. The coir doormat has a non-slip backing and measures 17 by 29 inches. There’s a black cat at the bottom of the mat that says “Hi!” to anyone who approaches your door, and if you look closer you’ll notice another cat at the top of the mat, upside down, that says “Bye…” so it reads the right way when you’re walking out!
8. Cats Welcome, People Tolerated
This hanging sign by D4DREAM on Amazon is made from PVC board that’s waterproof, so it can hang on your front door. It’s got a rope hanger and a black cat peeking over the top edge. It’s a cat version of the old “dogs welcome, people tolerated” sign, and it’ll let your guests know exactly where they stand (behind the cat, of course).
On Reddit, one person paired it with a doormat that’s even less subtle:
Me too! I have a sign hanging in my house that reads – “Cats Welcome. People Tolerated.” I also have a doormat that says Please Leave 😂

9. Welcome, Peasants.
This sign by rdejxgvl on Amazon hangs from a jute string and is made from white MDF board. A black cat peeks up from the bottom, and the whole thing is written from a cat’s perspective, which I’m sure we’ll all agree is the correct point of view. It measures about 30 by 15 centimeters, or about a foot wide.
10. Welcome, We Hope You Like Cat Hair
This one by CountryLaneCraftsCo on Etsy is a handmade pallet-wood sign that measures 15 by 5 inches, with a twine and raffia hanger. A country-style welcome sign is always a nice way to greet your visitors, even if they’re about to plop themselves down on your couch in their dark-colored pants. CountryLaneCraftsCo has over 10,000 sales on Etsy, so it’s a shop that’s been doing this a while.
11. Please Keep Door Closed, Cats Are Planning Their Escape
From TwoOclockWoodworks on Etsy, this is a white wooden sign, 7 by 5.5 inches, with a ribbon hanger. If you have indoor cats, you know how important it is to keep doors closed. If you’ve ever chased a cat around the backyard, or worse, had to search for a missing cat, you know that some reminders are worth repeating, especially when contractors or delivery people are involved. My cats are indoor cats, so this would be the sign I’d want hanging on my front door.
For the bathroom
If your cat sticks a paw under the bathroom door while you’re in there, the first sign might be for you, and the second one is for a different bathroom problem.

12. Welcome to the Bathroom. A Cat Will Be With You Shortly.
This bathroom sign measures about 8 inches wide and is handmade with wood by TimberDW on Etsy, and the 3D black cat is peeking in. It may be the most popular cat sign out there, and when the saying shows up on Reddit, it’s not unusual for a lot of commenters to say they have one, too!
Some people don’t even need the sign:
We have a saying in my house: Welcome to the bathroom. Please have a seat, and a cat will be with you shortly.

13. Cat Vomit (a Mini Wet Floor Sign)
Robsworld115 on Etsy has a 3D printed “wet floor” sign, too! The mini sign, “Cat Vomit,” stands 5 inches tall and is printed with PLA plastic, and the shop says it’s sturdy and doesn’t bend like cheaper versions. Set it next to the… uh… incident, until you can clean it up. There’s even an option for a 4-pack, which may say a lot about the frequency of said incident.
It sounds like a gag gift, but one Reddit commenter says theirs gets real use:
My favorite print my husband did was a wet floor like sign that says “be careful, cat vomit” and it was a joke but it seriously gets used.

For the wall
These are the bigger signs, and a lot of them are made of metal, so they’re suitable for display in your kitchen, garage or even outside in a catio.
14. Spoiled Cats Live Here With Their Household Staff
Hikiwin on Amazon makes this circular wooden sign, which measures 11.8 inches across and features three cartoon cats. I’m definitely part of the household staff since I’m the one who slips our cats a few extra treats. Every cat owner knows exactly who the “household staff” is, so this would make a great gift.
15. The Cats Are in Charge, I Just Live Here
MTsigns on Amazon makes this one out of aluminum, and it measures 12 by 6 inches, the size of a license plate, and the letters look like they’re cut out of old license plates. There are holes for hanging it up at the top and bottom. Since both Cory and I work from home, our cats have two household staff members on hand all day!
16. I Do Not Think, Therefore I Do Not Am
Fynleka’s tin sign on Amazon is 12 by 8 inches and shows a black cat looking into a mirror. The saying is a play on Descartes’ “I think, therefore I am,” and a riff on the common joke that orange cats all share one brain cell, but since I have an orange cat (Thelma), I’m going to let that one go.
17. There’s, Like, a Lot of Cats in Here
For a catio, a cat room or a rescue, check out this one by BlueFoxGifts on Etsy. This long, skinny aluminum sign comes in either 12 by 3 inches or 18 by 4 inches, and it’s safe for outside, too. The shop prints its signs in Michigan, has over 90,000 sales, and offers signs with your choice of text as well.
18. Warning, the Cat Is a Jerk
The kitchenconnection sign on Etsy looks like an old industrial warning sign, except instead of warning people about some hazard, it’s warning them about a cat who’s pushing a cup of coffee off a table. The sign is made of aluminum and comes in 8 by 11 inches or 11 by 14 inches, and the seller designs and makes each one. There’s also a ruder version.
19. Judgy Cat Lounge: Serving Coffee & Silent Judgment
This SignVibe sign on Etsy is made for your coffee bar or kitchen. If you drink your coffee in the company of a judgy cat, you know exactly what I mean. This aluminum sign is round and eight inches across, so it’s small enough to fit even if you don’t have a lot of wall space.
20. I Do What I Want
ReddoorsRustics on Etsy makes this wooden cat knocking a cup off a ledge, with the saying painted down the side. It’s hand painted and can be propped up on a shelf or on top of a door frame, and it comes in a few sizes and four colors (black, grey, linen and white). It’s the only sign on the list that isn’t flat, which makes it a good option for a spot where a regular sign wouldn’t work.
A few things to know before you order
Most block signs are pretty small, just 5 or 6 inches across, so check the size before you buy. They look cute on shelves, but can get lost on a larger wall.
Most of the shops on Etsy are small businesses, and many make the signs once an order comes in. If you’re shopping for a special occasion like a holiday or birthday, check the processing time on each listing! Some sellers will also do custom signs (like your cat’s name), so send them a message to see if they offer that.

For those planning on displaying a sign outside, I’d recommend checking the materials. One of the aluminum sign sellers says their signs won’t rust but can fade over time when left out in the sun, and the seller of the coir doormat says it lasts longest on a covered porch. I live in Florida, so covered areas seem to be the way to go!
